A weighted grade is an average where some items count more than others. A GPA is the same idea applied to courses: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add the results, and divide by total credits. The hard part is not the arithmetic; it is using the right scale for your school.

Formula 1: weighted course grade
For assignments inside one course:
weighted grade = sum(score × weight) / sum(weight)
Use the weights from the syllabus. If only 70% of the course has been graded so far, divide by 70, not by 100. That gives your current average on completed work.

The weighted sum is 5,840 and the completed weight is 70. Current grade:
5,840 / 70 = 83.43

Formula 2: what score do you need on the final?
If the remaining final exam is worth 30% and your target course grade is 85, solve:
target = current × current_weight/100 + final_score × final_weight/100
Rearranged:
final_score = (target - current × current_weight/100) / (final_weight/100)
Using the example above:
(85 - 83.43 × 0.70) / 0.30 = 88.67
So you need about 89 on a final worth 30% to reach 85 overall. If the result is above 100, the target is not reachable through that final alone. Example: current 62 on 75% of the grade, final 25%, target 75:
(75 - 62 × 0.75) / 0.25 = 114
That does not mean the formula failed. It means the remaining assessment is too small to lift the average to the target unless the syllabus has extra credit, replacement rules, or dropped scores.
Formula 3: credit-weighted GPA
For GPA:
GPA = sum(grade points × credits) / sum(credits)
Cornell’s ILR School explains the same credit-hour method and publishes an example grade-point table where A+ is 4.3, A is 4.0, A- is 3.7, and F is 0 (Cornell ILR Academic Grades and Notations, accessed 2026-08-17). That source is useful precisely because it shows why you must check the institution: Lutrakit’s current GPA Calculator uses a common 4.0-capped table where A+ and A both count as 4.0.

Quality points: 53.0. Credits: 15.
53.0 / 15 = 3.53
If your school counts A+ as 4.3, the last row becomes 4.3 quality points and the same semester becomes 53.3 / 15 = 3.55. That difference is small here because the course is one credit, but it is still real. Do not enter a 4.3 or 5.0 scale into Lutrakit’s current GPA tool unless the UI supports it; the present tool is bounded to 0-4.0 grade points.
Current Lutrakit limits: when the 4.0 cap is unsuitable
The current GPA Calculator is intentionally simple: 0-4.0 grade points, the built-in A+ = A = 4.0 table, up to 100 courses, and up to 1,000 credits or units per course. That makes it useful for checking a standard 4.0 semester average, but not for every institutional rule.

The Grade Calculator has a different scope. It works with 0-100 scores and weights for one course. It is not a transcript GPA tool, and it does not know letter-grade conversions, repeated-course rules, or institutional rounding policies.
Scales are policy, not universal math
The average formula travels well, but grade scales do not. Spain’s national university grading regulation sets numeric marks from 0 to 10 with bands such as 5.0-6.9 Aprobado, 7.0-8.9 Notable, and 9.0-10 Sobresaliente; it also limits Matrícula de Honor awards (BOE Real Decreto 1125/2003, accessed 2026-08-17). Japanese universities also publish their own GPA rules. Kyushu University, for example, describes GPA as grade points multiplied by credits and divided by total credit value, with grades converted to points between four and zero (Kyushu University GPA System, accessed 2026-08-17).
Those official examples do not authorize a universal conversion table. A Spanish 8/10 is not automatically 3.2/4.0, and a Japanese S grade is not automatically the same as a US A+ for admissions or scholarship decisions. If a conversion matters, use the receiving institution’s published policy.
Edge cases that change the answer
The calculation is transparent, but the row list is a policy decision. These are the cases that most often make a hand GPA disagree with a transcript:

Worked edge-case GPA: pass/fail and repeated courses
Suppose your planning list has these courses:

If the pass/fail lab is excluded and the repeated course replaces the old attempt, enter only Biology, Design Studio, and the Algebra repeat:

GPA = (9.9 + 16.0 + 9.0) / (3 + 4 + 3) = 34.9 / 10 = 3.49
If a different institution averages both Algebra attempts, the same visible grades become:
GPA = (9.9 + 16.0 + 3.0 + 9.0) / (3 + 4 + 3 + 3) = 37.9 / 13 = 2.92
If you mistakenly include the pass/fail lab’s 1 credit in the divisor without grade points, you get 34.9 / 11 = 3.17, which is neither of the two policy-correct answers. That is why “which rows count?” comes before “what formula do I use?”
Verification checklist
- Confirm the syllabus weights before using the grade calculator.
- Make sure entered weights add to the completed portion, and completed plus final weight equals 100 when solving for a final.
- For GPA, confirm whether your school uses 4.0, 4.3, 5.0, 10, 20, pass/fail exclusions, repeated-course rules, or ungraded credits.
- Recalculate one row by hand:
score × weightorpoints × credits. - Compare the calculator’s total weight or total credits with your own list.
- Treat screenshots of calculator results as planning notes, not official records.
Limits and when not to use this
Do not use this method alone for academic standing, graduation eligibility, financial aid, admissions, or visa documentation. Institutional rules can exclude courses, truncate decimals, replace repeated grades, weight honors courses, or handle failures differently. The calculator is useful for transparent arithmetic; the official policy decides which numbers belong in the arithmetic.
